Should You Use A Search Engine Submission Service?

If you are a webmaster or own a website, no doubt you’ve received at least one solicitation email encouraging you to sign up for a search engine submission service. There are some that are quite inexpensive, and some that are quite expensive. So, the question is…

Should you use a Search Engine Submission Service?

My answer is that it depends on a number of factors.

If you use WordPress for your website or blog, I would say no because WordPress is so search engine friendly that any time you update your WordPress site or blog WordPress pings those changes to at least one pinging service. You can check to see what pinging service is used by clicking on “Settings” and then “Writing” in your WordPress Admin panel. It’s usually set to http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ . There are other pinging services you can use and you can add them in the box to ping multiple services. Pinging doesn’t cost anything and it’s a great way to let the search engines know that you’ve made changes so they can send their spiders to index the changes.

If you have a website that was not built on the WordPress platform, the ideal situation would be to optimize your site for the keywords that you feel most closely match what your site is about. It’s free to do this and it costs you nothing but the amount of time you spend doing it. You can do it yourself by doing keyword research, modifying your Title and Meta tags, and making sure the keywords you find, and decide to use, are reflected on your website. There’s a bit more to it than what I’ve listed but these are the basics and will take you a long way to getting your site listed in the search engines, which will bring you free traffic. If you decide to do it yourself, I would strongly suggest purchasing a book on search engine optimization (SEO). There are good ones at the book store and you can also find them online.

If you want to do site optimization yourself but the thought of reading through boring SEO books makes you run the other way, There are also software programs that you can use to learn how to do it yourself. One of my favorites, which I use almost every day, is called Market Samurai. I like it because it’s very easy to use, can be used for more than just site optimization, is updated regularly, and has great video tutorials that teach you everything you need to know to use the program and optimize your site. You can learn more about it by going to Market Samurai where you can download it for free and try it for 7 days.

If you don’t want to optimize your site yourself, hire someone to do it for you instead of paying a company to submit your site to the search engines. You’ll save money, bring more traffic to your site, and put yourself in a much better position to make sales than just submitting to search engines. Why? No matter how many times your site is submitted to the search engines, it will not help in getting it ranked highly if you haven’t optimized it for the necessary keywords. Sites don’t get ranked highly based on the number of times they have been submitted. Sites get ranked highly because the site is optimized to attract the right visitor using the right content that the search engines say is needed to rank highly (among other things).

After you’ve optimized your site, if you want to spend a little bit to have your site submitted to search engines once or twice over a 60-90 day period, go ahead. That would be a prudent time to spend money on search engine submission. Remember, it can take 30 days or longer for your website to get indexed by the search engines (WordPress sites and blogs can take as little as 24 hours).
